Iran has stopped visa-free entry of Indian citizens. Tehran has taken this decision due to the increase in cases of human trafficking and ransom due to the lure of fake jobs.

This decision will be effective from November 22. As a result, Indians have to obtain visas in advance both for entry and transit to Iran.

In a circular on Monday (November 17), the Ministry of External Affairs of India said that the aim of this decision is to stop the evil tactics of organized human trafficking gangs. These gangs were taking advantage of the visa exemption and sending helpless and job-seeking Indians to Iran under false lure.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, many Indians were sent to Iran with the promise of high-paying jobs, easy access to Gulf countries or Europe and visa-free employment. But on reaching there many of them were kidnapped and demanded ransom by human traffickers.

According to the notification, the attention of the government has been drawn to several incidents of Indian citizens being sent to Iran on the lure of fake jobs. After reaching Iran, many of them were kidnapped and ransom was demanded.

Earlier, the Indian government had warned last month that some fraudulent agents were sending people to Iran with the lure of jobs. It was then said that visa-free entry is only for tourism purposes and does not apply for employment in any way.

Since February last year, Iran has granted limited-time visa-free entry to citizens of several countries, including India, to strengthen diplomatic ties. Under that arrangement, holders of Indian ordinary passports could enter Iran visa-free for tourism purposes for a maximum of 15 days once every six months. However, due to human trafficking, Tehran finally suspended that facility.
