ASSUMPTION- The Association of Doctors of the Social Security Institute (IPS) called a general assembly on July 6 to define force measures in the event of non-compliance with Law 7137, which establishes the dignified salary and hourly workload for each link of the health professionals who work in the institution. They do not rule out the possibility of going to a general strike, according to Dr. Elías Rolón, president of the union.
In an interview with the radio station 1080 AM, Rolón pointed out that, unlike the Ministry of Health, where the law was complied with, salary leveling has not yet been implemented in the IPS.
“In IPS, the doctor is hired with a salary of G. 4,500,000, while in the Ministry of Health it is G. 5,500,000 for a 12-hour contract,” explained Rolón. This discrepancy affects approximately 2,514 doctors who provide services at the institution.
The doctor also pointed out that doctors in the social security system have not received a salary increase in the last 15 years, a situation that contrasts with the high salaries in Congress and other institutions. “We see in the press that they hire 19-year-olds who earn five times more than a doctor,” he said, referring to the children of parliamentarians known as “nepobabies.”
Rolón stressed that the doctors do not want to resort to a strike and prefer that the law be followed. However, he warned that if they do not obtain a satisfactory response from the authorities, they will have no choice but to take forceful measures. “We don’t want to go on strike, we want compliance with the law. But if we do not receive a response, we will have to resort to a measure of force,” he concluded.
