Iodine deficiency can cause mental retardation.
Publik.az Anadolu Agency reports that the Ministry of Health of Turkey has issued a warning in this regard.
Iodine is defined as a mineral necessary for normal growth and development, which is found in very small amounts in the body. As a result, mental retardation and goiter can occur. Iodine deficiency diseases are more common especially in regions with iodine deficiency in the soil. This is vital for the body, which needs a small amount of iodine. Iodine is used in the production of thyroid hormones in the thyroid gland. Hormones synthesized in the thyroid gland enter the blood and control various functions in the body. Thyroid hormones ensure normal growth and development, normal functioning of the brain, regulate body temperature, control the body’s energy and influence the functioning of the nervous system.
Goiter is the most common disease due to iodine deficiency. Iodine deficiency is cited as one of the main causes of preventable mental retardation and a set of diseases that negatively affect a person throughout his life, starting from the womb. The risk groups in which the negative effects of iodine deficiency are observed are women, infants and children. This causes important health problems caused by iodine deficiency, such as stunted growth and development in infants and children, reduced learning ability and educational success, increased risk of stillbirth in pregnant women, and goitre. When people do not get enough iodine on a daily basis, not only one disease, but also a number of functional and developmental disorders can occur. These are briefly referred to as iodine deficiency diseases.
