The development of the Chancay Megaport reaches 85% progress and is scheduled to begin operations in November
The Minister of Transport and Communications (MTC), Raul Perez Reyesreported that the country has a set of investments in railway infrastructure, along with those destined for Central roadwhich amount to approximately 37,000 million dollars.
He pointed out that nations with considerable export volumes, such as Peru, choose to mainly use the train as their main means of transportation in that activitysince it contributes to the reduction of logistics costs.
«We have multiple routes, and one of them is the one that goes from Apurímac to Marcona, with a focus mainly oriented towards mining activity. We will strive for connecting this route with the port of Marcona, which was concessioned a few weeks ago“, he pointed.
The official also mentioned that the terms of reference are being prepared for a railway project that would start from Chota and extend to the vicinity of Cajamarca, and then descend towards the coast, reaching Eten, in Lambayeque.
He explained that different options are being evaluated for port management of mining cargo transportation. He highlighted that only in Cajamarca there are four projects with investments pending several billion dollars in infrastructure, and companies have shown their interest in them.
«In addition, we are moving forward with local trains, such as the Lima-Ica project, whose profile is close to being approved. We are also starting studies for the Lima-Barranca sectionand soon we will begin the studies for the Barranca-Trujillo section,” he declared.

Minister Pérez Reyes gave details about the progress of the Chancay megaport, indicating that has reached 85% progressand the work is expected to be inaugurated in November.
«We are talking about an estimated capacity between one and 1.5 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units). In June, the inauguration of the expansion of the South Pier will take place, which will increase its capacity to around 2.7 million TEU,” he explained.
«The Callao connection center (which includes the North Pier and the South Pier) and Chancay make up the second most significant hub in the region, since we have a capacity that exceeds 5 million TEU, and with the expansions, this figure will rise above 7 million TEU«he highlighted.
He noted that there is growth potential for both the North Pier and South Pieras well as for the Chancay port.
