ASSUMPTION- The recent intervention at the General Hospital of Barrio Obrero, carried out by the Ministry of Public Health and Social Welfare, revealed multiple deficiencies in the emergency service, according to Dr. Derlis Ocampos, director of the Office of the Vice Ministry of Comprehensive Health Care.
The investigation was carried out after complaints of alleged lack of care for two people. Dr. Ocampos, who led the team of intervenors, told radio station 1080 AM that several deficiencies were detected in the hospital services, especially in the emergency area. These shortcomings were partially corrected during the intervention, and more changes were planned in the medium term, according to their expressions.
“The quality of care is the main shortcoming identified, and it is indisputable,” said Ocampos. For this reason, constant training of staff was recommended to improve the Reception, Accommodation and Classification (RAC) procedure, as well as the management of internal circuits and patient flows, and the distribution of nursing staff.
One of the cases that prompted the intervention was that of a woman with a broken leg and a man with a gunshot wound to the head, both of whom were poorly treated at the end of May. Ocampos explained that the woman was treated in nine minutes, but there was an initial period of no care and then inadequate care. In addition, errors were found in the signage in the emergency area, which makes quick access to services difficult.
The report on the intervention was sent to the Legal Department, which is currently evaluating the sanctions for the officials involved in the incidents. In total, 11 employees have been charged, although this number could be reduced after the detailed evaluation.
To address the problems identified, the report suggests various actions, such as improving clinical records, restructuring the emergency area, and implementing the informed consent form. In addition, it is proposed to develop voluntary registration formats and establish a care flow chart for users brought in by the National Police.
Dr. Ocampos emphasized that “a person who goes to any hospital center must be treated with the highest quality and speed possible,” underlining the need to continually improve health services in the country.
