International Contemporary Music Festival closes with a free concert

The International Festival of Contemporary Music, organized by the Department of Music of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Chile, began last Friday, September 5 with news in its programming, international guests and artistic spaces.

Meanwhile, its closure will take place in the Grand National Symphony Chamber on Friday, September 12 at 7:30 p.m., with a free concert by the National Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of the guest teacher Rodolfo Fischer.

The concert will depart with the Greek pianist Ermis Theodorakis, international guest of the meeting, who will interpret the works Mits (1980) and Evryali (1973) of his compatriot Iannis Xenakis.

The program also includes the premiere in Chile of the Concert for Harp and Orchestra of Gustavo Becerra, within the framework of the centenary of its birth, played by Sofía Asunción Claro, precisely for whom the work was written and who was also responsible for its world premiere in Spain in 2006.

Likewise, the winning piece of the Symphonic Works Contest held this year by the Department of Music, Prelude and Fugging, by Nicolás Cortés and flashes of a sound landscape, by Vicente Olave, a piece that won the same contest in version 2020 of the Festival and that could never be released due to the closure of the University of Chile Product of Chile Product of the Mobilizations initiated in 2019 and the subsequent sanitary crisis.

Cultural ambassador

The director of the Center for Artistic and Cultural Extension of the University of Chile, CEAC, Dominique Thomann, said that “the National Symphony Orchestra, with her recognized technical-artistic excellence, is once again consolidated as Chile’s cultural ambassador, carrying contemporary music to new audiences and strengthening the national artistic landscape.”

“We hope that this virtuous bond between the world of composition and musical interpretation continues to narrow and grow through the Contemporary Music Festival of the University of Chile and congratulate the winners of the XXV version of the contest for their great work,” he said.

For his part, the director of the meeting, Professor Andrés Maupoint, said that “it is a version of the festival that means a jump for us, because we will be for the first time in the great National Symphony Chamber, because we have added to the Arruu room of the Municipal Theater, because we have two international guests of great category and because we have been able to take this music to other spaces such as the Master Room, schools and universities. scenario that I think we have not yet been able to dimension in its entirety. ”

Indeed, the festival’s programming has been possible thanks to the National Music Development Fund: first with the project favored in the 2024 call in the Trajectory Festivals line and this year with the unique amount of complementary activities that are part of the Line Fairs and Trajectory Festivals, Financing Glosa No. 9, Budget Law 2025, which could mean a direct contribution to this meeting in each of its versions.
