Iran’s Vice President Hossein Hazizadeh Hashemi has announced that he is withdrawing his candidacy from the presidential election. As is known, the voting will take place on June 28. The fact that Vice-President Hashemi withdraws his candidacy on the threshold of this fact, proves that a rather active and sharp “under the carpet” struggle for the leadership of Iran’s president is unfolding. This is also evidenced by the statement that Hashemi made when withdrawing his candidacy. He says he withdraws the candidacy “to preserve the unity of the revolutionary forces”.
Hashemi also states that he withdraws his candidacy at the request of the Islamic Revolution Council. Moreover, he also points to three other candidates, stating that “he hopes that his other three brothers will take advantage of the opportunity to unite and strengthen the revolution.” He expressed hope that the course of late President Ebrahim Raisi will continue in the country. This is quite a remarkable statement, if we consider that in Iran, the state course is determined not by the president, but by the Supreme Spiritual Leader.
At the same time, Iran, of course, being a rather large player, can certainly adopt different tactics in terms of state strategy, in which the management of the executive power, carried out by the president, can certainly be of significant importance. The decision and statements of Iran’s Vice President Hashemi suggest that ahead of the election of the president of Iran, there is quite a heated battle regarding the tactical ways of implementing the Iranian strategy. By and large, there is little time left to wait for its result, but it is also beyond doubt that the struggle of non-ruling elites in Iran will not end at all.
Of course, this is not about Iran’s instability, but on the contrary, its resilience, which is also ensured by the internal competition of the elites. At the same time, however, this circumstance is extremely important for those countries that have friendship, close communication and essential work needs with Iran. By the way, in that regard, it is noteworthy that along with the information about the Iranian Vice President’s announcement of that decision, information was spread that there was a telephone conversation between Russian President Putin and Iran’s Acting President Mohammad Mohbar, during which Putin wished success in the upcoming presidential election and to express hope that after that the relationship between Iran and Russia will continue on an upward path. Did Putin have any qualms about that choice? At the same time, it should be noted that yesterday it became known about the signing of a memorandum of strategic gas cooperation between Russia and Iran. Isn’t everyone in Iran’s elite happy about it?
