NEW YORK (AP) — The second week of “Inside Out 2” proved to be just as cheerful.
Pixar’s sequel grossed $100 million in ticket sales in its second weekend, according to estimates released Sunday by the studio, setting a new record for an animated film sequel in theaters.
The previous best second weekend for an animated title was “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” with $92 million. Only six films have had better second weekends.
In just a week and a half, “Inside Out 2” has become the highest-grossing film of 2024 to date with $724.4 million worldwide, including $355.2 million earned in theaters in the United States and Canada.
That surpasses “Dune: Part Two’s” worldwide total of $711.8 million. “Inside Out 2” is likely to surpass the $1 billion mark in about a week, which would make it the first movie since “Barbie” to do so.
The scope of the success of “Inside Out 2” stunned Hollywood, which had grown accustomed to lower expectations as the film industry saw ticket sales drop about 40% below pre-coronavirus pandemic totals, according to data firm Comscore, before Pixar’s new film arrived.
Still, the record for “Inside Out 2” is reminiscent of years past when hitting the $1 billion total was more common for Walt Disney Co. It also represents a much-needed box office hit for Pixar, which, after experimenting with streaming releases, has reconsidered its theatrical releases and strategy for appealing to mass audiences.
Below, the 10 highest-grossing movies between Friday and Sunday in the United States and Canada, according to Comscore. The final figures come out on Monday.
