Matteo Bassetti, director of the Infectious Diseases Clinic at the San Martino Polyclinic in Genoa, said that this year’s flu season will be remembered as one of the worst ever. Bassetti said there has been a sharp increase in respiratory infections and influenza viruses such as H1N1 and H3N2. Furthermore, the spread of bacterial infections and pneumococcal pneumonia has increased. The director also stated that: “unlike the problem of the growth of influenza infections, Covid has not been a significant problem in the last three months”.

In particular, the infectious disease specialist’s words to Messaggero: “80% of hospitalizations between November and December were not directly related to Covid infection, but rather to people who went to hospital for other reasons and subsequently tested positive for the swab”. In closing, highlighting the increase in flu and lung infections, Matteo Bassetti urged people (in particular the elderly) to undergo booster vaccinations to reduce the health risks posed by the aforementioned diseases.
