Finally a stalemate broke in Indian cricket. There were many discussions and criticisms about whether Rohit Sharma will be kept in this year’s T20 World Cup or not. India has finally made Rohit the captain. As a result, Indians will play under him in the World Cup.
This information was given by the Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Jai Shah while talking to the media in Rajkot on Wednesday.
Before this, India also played the 2022 T20 World Cup under Rohit. This time too, the burden of India’s leadership has been given on the shoulders of ‘Hitman’ fame Rohit. As a result, Rohit is leading India in two consecutive T20 World Cups.
In the 2022 tournament, India lost to England in the semi-finals and exited the tournament. Since then, Rohit has not played a single T20 match in the entire year of 2023. Finally, the Indian opener returned to the game in the short format in the series against Afghanistan in January this year.
Rohit’s return to the team against Afghanistan indicated that Rohit has returned to the field to prepare for the World Cup. Means, this right-handed Marquette batter is going to play in the World Cup organized by the United States and West Indies next June. And yesterday Jai Shah confirmed that.
“Recently coming back after a year to lead the Afghanistan series means he is obviously going to the World Cup (to lead the T20 World Cup),” Shah said at a ceremony to rename the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium as the Niranjan Shah Cricket Stadium on Wednesday.
Suryakumar Yadav was given the captaincy of India’s T20 team after India lost the World Cup final at home under Rohit. Surya led the team in the T20I series against Australia and South Africa immediately after the World Cup. Because of that, many thought that India might play the World Cup under the sun. But in the end it didn’t happen anymore.
Virat Kohli was also worried. Because after the 2022 World Cup, like Rohit, Kohli also did not play any T20 match in 2023. Finally, this former captain of the Indian team also returned to the team against the Afghans. That means, Kohli will stay with the team for the next World Cup.
