Four more people died after a landslide after torrential rains washed away their home while they were sleeping
At least six people have died this week and about 2,000 tourists have been stranded in India’s Himalayan state of Sikkim by landslides and flooding following heavy rains, officials said today.
Four other people died in Taplejung district, which borders Sikkim, after a landslide after torrential rains washed away their house while they were sleeping, officials said.
Heavy rains have triggered landslides in many areas in Mangan, which covers the region north of Sikkim and lies about 100 kilometers north of the state capital, Gangtok, the local government of the northeastern Indian state said.
“It has been raining non-stop for 36 hours. The road to north Sikkim has been damaged at several places, cutting off connectivity to the district,” said Hem Kumar Chhetri, a district official.
“The stranded tourists are all safe, but we have not been able to evacuate them because of the disasters,” he said, adding that 11 of them were foreign tourists.
