What does the allergy reveal? An itchy feeling, redness and small water blisters around the nail and on the fingertips – we can read in a statement from Semmelweis University. But these often appear not immediately, but even several years after the first use.
If those affected touch other parts of their body with lacquered hands – neck, chest, eyes, hands – complaints may occur there as well.
The problem is most often caused by the fact that the varnish does not solidify completely, and some of the liquid substance gets into the skin at the edges of the nails, which causes so-called allergic contact dermatitis (inflammation of the skin).
– Lőrinc Kendé, assistant professor at the Semmelweis University Department of Dermatology, Dermatology and Dermatology, was quoted in the announcement.
He added: the side effects may appear within a few days as a result of the immune system’s response, and a persistent, long-term allergy may develop. In this case, the gel polish must be removed as quickly as possible so that it does not cause further inflammation and the affected area does not become infected, and then a dermatologist must be consulted.
An allergic reaction and possible superinfection can be cured quickly with local anti-inflammatory and antibiotic creams.
In this case, it is not recommended to wear additional gel polish, as there is a good chance that complaints may reoccur, the announcement reads. With a skin allergy test, the so-called epicutaneous patch test, it can be determined which of the ingredients we are sensitive to.
But – Lőrinc Kende adds – inflammation of a non-allergic type can also occur, when the components of the preparations can cause irritative inflammation on the skin, the wounds of which can become infected. The doctor also says that gel polish can also change the structure of the nail. it can make it soft, sensitive and vulnerable.
Unfortunately, it can also happen that some pathogen gets under the nail, which then leads to, for example, the green nail syndrome, which is caused by the pseudomonas bacteria. In order to prevent gel polish allergy, always consult a qualified manicurist, make sure that there are no injuries on your hands and do not use products that cannot be controlled according to the specialist’s recommendation.
