Cyclone Boris is raging in the Somogy county as well, with wind gusts of 130 kilometers per hour measured at Fonyód over the weekend, reports the Somogy County news portal.
The cyclone brought with it extremely stormy weather and a large amount of precipitation in the Balaton area, the difference between the most extreme water level values measured on the northern and southern shores of the lake was 33 centimeters. At dawn on Sunday, experts measured 109 centimeters in Sióf and 76 centimeters in Badacsony.
Flood risk in Hungary
The flood wave arrived in Hungary on Monday, in the Szigetköz they already defended themselves against the flood on Monday, with sandbags in many settlements, and all the water experts from Eastern Hungary were sent to this part of the country. In the following days, the Danube will almost always peak somewhere, the river may reach its peak at Nagybajcs during the day on Thursday, and this is expected in Budapest on Saturday, where the highest water level is expected to be 860 centimeters.
As for the weather, the rain will stop in most places by Tuesday morning, and the Carpathian basin will move to the southern edge of the northern anticyclone, so a basically dry air mass will come over the country. “For this reason, no significant rainfall is expected in the next five to seven days in Hungary or in the Danube river basins,” writes HungaroMet.
