At 8 a.m., the bells will ring again across the country, marking the beginning of the 2024/2025 school year. It is a tradition at Index to collect what is worth knowing about the school on the first day of school. We did so in 2021, 2022 and 2023 as well. This year, however, it is particularly important to summarize what awaits students and teachers, as there have been many changes affecting public education in the past period.

This is how the teaching breaks work

In its decree published at the beginning of August, the Ministry of the Interior stated that there will be no change compared to the plan and that the winter break will last for two weeks this time as well. Therefore, in the 2024/2025 academic year, the teaching breaks will be as follows:

  • The 2024/2025 academic year the first day of school is Monday, September 2, 2024, and the last day of school is Friday, June 20, 2025.
  • Autumn break last school day before Friday, October 25, 2024, first school day after the break Monday, November 4, 2024.
  • The winter break the last school day before the break is Friday, December 20, 2024, and the first school day after the break is Monday, January 6, 2025.
  • Spring break last school day before April 16, 2025 (Wednesday), first school day after the break April 28, 2025 (Monday).
  • The summer vacation It starts on June 21, 2025 and runs until August 31.

The first semester of the academic year lasts until January 17, and schools will notify students and parents of the academic results of the first semester by January 24. The number of teaching days will be 183 days in all types of institutions, with the exception of high schools, vocational high schools and vocational schools.

When will the graduation and high school admissions be?

The first compulsory subject will be Hungarian language and literature, for which the students will take the exam on October 14, 2024, starting at 8 a.m. For advanced level oral exams, November 7–11, 2024. will take place between, while the intermediate ones will take place from November 18-22, 2024. between.

2025-I am a spring written graduation exams begin on May 5 with Hungarian language and literature, on the last day, May 23, the written exam in Italian is held. The deadline for applying to secondary schools will be February 20, 2025, and students of compulsory school age can be enrolled in the first grade of primary school on April 10-11, 2025.

New laws, regulations and other changes

The bill package submitted by Deputy Prime Minister Zsolt Semjén at the beginning of June affected public education at several points. In addition to ordering soldiers to school, the so-called salad law also contained a decree restricting the use of mobile phones by students.

Legislation on sending soldiers to school

Based on the law passed in an accelerated procedure in June, from September 1, any soldier over the age of 55 can be transferred to school districts, where they must be employed even if they do not have a degree.

According to Zoltán Maruzsa, the state secretary responsible for public education, if the veteran in question does not have a teaching qualification, he will not teach. At the same time, new employees coming to the school district can not only be hired as teachers, but can also perform economic, administrative, technical and support jobs that directly support education and training.

Decree on the restriction of mobile phone use at school

On September 1, the government’s decree on “the range of prohibited and restricted objects in educational institutions, as well as the detailed rules of the procedure for the objects” entered into force, according to which telecommunications devices – especially mobile phones – are classified as restricted objects in schools. , devices capable of recording images or sound and smart devices capable of accessing the Internet.

These can be brought into the institution, provided that the student hands them in at the beginning of the school day, before the start of classes, as specified in the institution’s policy. The authorization for their possession and use is carried out by the director or the teacher in the study system, by recording, for example, the purpose of using the smartphone, as well as the period of validity of the authorization.

Prohibited items at school

In addition, there are also prohibited items that cannot be brought into schools at all. According to the text of the decree, “students may not bring into an educational institution:

  • 175/2003 on devices particularly dangerous to public safety. (X. 28.) Device particularly dangerous to public safety according to government decree,
  • the item whose possession is regulated by Act II of 2012 on violations, the violation procedure and the violation registration system. you are in law
  • shall be punished according to the provisions of Act C of 2012 on the Criminal Code, or
  • a product that cannot be sold to a person under the age of eighteen”.

For these items, the teacher can ask the student to hand over the device, but if necessary, he can notify the parent, the “person involved in maintaining the order of the educational institution” (e.g. school guard), or even the police.

The regulations apply to primary schools, secondary schools, colleges and vocational schools.

Educators’ performance evaluation system

From the 2024/2025 school year, the performance evaluation of teachers will begin “on the basis of individualized annual performance goals and uniform evaluation criteria that display individual components of task performance.”

The teachers will be evaluated by their own superior, i.e. the head of the institution, who can also involve parents and students in the process. The institution managers themselves are evaluated by a representative appointed by the maintainer.

A performance of 80 percent or above will be evaluated as an outstanding performance level. A teacher who achieves at least 50 percent of the available score or has a performance below 80 percent will be considered to have an average level of performance. Those who perform below 50 percent are classified as teachers with a performance level to be improved. The teacher salary increase continues

Gergely Gulyás, the Minister in charge of the Prime Minister’s Office, announced a week ago in the Kormányinfo that the government, in accordance with its previous commitments, will continue the salary increase program for teachers, as a result of which teachers’ salaries will reach 80 percent of the average graduate salary next year. With this – according to the minister – by the beginning of 2027, teachers’ salaries may exceed HUF one million gross.
