“Our survival is not self-evident, so we had to do it and we must do it, with the tools of the law, the achievements of culture, the results of science,” stressed the President of the Republic Tamás Sulyok at the Kossuth and Széchenyi awards and the Hungarian Order of Merit, which were awarded on the occasion of the March 15 national holiday. – at the awards ceremony on Thursday in the Parliament.

“”Stand up Hungarian” is not a simple cry, but a continuous, centuries-long imperative, a command to win rights and freedom in times of loss of rights and oppression,” said the President of the Republic, who put it this way: “in a special way, we Hungarians are fighting in the meantime, we have become big and world famous. Arranging ourselves defiantly in rows, we became our own protective walls even when our bastions had already been knocked down”.

Praising the awardees, he highlighted: “those whom the nation today assures of its deep appreciation, they have turned from cultivators of culture and science into its expanders, adding to the European and universal human treasury with admirable effectiveness.”

Kossuth prize winners

He received the Kossuth Grand Prize:

PÉTER EÖTVÖS Honored with the Hungarian Order of Saint Stephen, Kossuth Prize-winning composer, conductor, music pedagogue, his art enriches the opera literature with outstanding works in addition to various instrumental genres, his work as a conductor increases the international status of Hungarian classical music and is exemplary in the interpretation of contemporary music, epoch-making in recognition of his significant life work.

  • SALAMIN FERENC Ybl Miklós Prize-winning architect, full member of the Hungarian Academy of Arts, in recognition of his design work that matures the masterpieces of organic regional architecture serving the continuation of tradition;
  • MIKLÓS SZŐCS TUI Mihály Munkácsy Prize-winning sculptor, full member of the Hungarian Academy of Arts, in recognition of his works reflecting deep spirituality, moving on the frontiers of autonomous sculpture, applied toy making and furniture art, created by unusual processing of the noblest types of wood;
  • GÁBOR TAKÁCS-NAGY Ferenc Liszt Prize-winning violinist, conductor, meritorious artist, in recognition of his art enriching Hungarian classical music with his first-rate work as a conductor in addition to his decades of inspiring activity as a performer and chamber artist;
  • LÁSZLÓ TOLCSVAY Erkel Ferenc Prize-winning composer, performer, co-founder of the Tolcsvay Trio, as an outstanding individual of the beat generation of the sixties, as a member of the Tolcsvay Trio and Fonógráf ensembles, and as the composer of the Hungarian Mass, the Gospel of Mary and the National Song, he uniquely shaped Hungarian music culture and in recognition of his enriching performing arts work;
  • TRILL ZSOLT Jászai Mari award-winning actor, excellent and worthy artist, in recognition of his portrayals of both dramatic and comedic characters with exemplary authenticity, his unforgettable performances in outstandingly successful plays and his valuable work as a film actor;
  • GYÖRGY VASHEGYI, Ferenc Liszt Prize-winning conductor, full member of the Hungarian Academy of Arts, former president, his internationally significant conducting activity, especially his unique artistic work in the Hungarian interpretation of the genre of early music, his value-creating activities as the founding leader of the Purcell Choir and the Orfeo Orchestra, as well as the artistic in recognition of his decisive work in public life;
  • ANDRÁS József Attila Prize-winning writer, dramatist, in recognition of his valuable dramaturgical activity and art of writing, especially his masterpiece, The Expulsion, which asserts the power of love lived in faith amid the humiliations of the dictatorship, the unshakable human support and the preservation of Hungarian identity, for example;
