Index – Belföld – Two months’ worth of rain falls in one day, and the tidal wave begins on the Danube

After the dry summer months, the soil is becoming more and more saturated, and due to the significant rainfall that has fallen so far and is expected in the coming days, a larger tidal wave will descend on the Danube. Depending on the development of the water level, the water authorities may even order a level of preparedness of level three – or higher. Due to the amount of precipitation falling in the Alps, the preparedness also applies to the catchment areas of the Danube, Lajta, Rába and Répce rivers.

It is constantly raining in the Danube catchment area: in the last 24 hours, a larger precipitation zone has passed over us, as a result of which rain and showers have occurred throughout the country, and thunderstorms have also formed in the eastern regions. Between 10 and 20 millimeters of precipitation was recorded in most parts of Hungary, but 51 millimeters also accumulated in the northeast. In addition, as it was reported, in the north-west, strong gale-force winds in some places made the weather even more unpleasant.

According to current forecasts, the Danube may peak at a water level of around 8 meters in the capital in the second half of next week – but experts believe that it is still too early to report a flood risk. Mayor Gergely Karácsony ordered second-level flood preparedness on Friday due to the rising water level of the Danube. As a result of the measure, the lower quays will also be closed from Monday. According to current forecasts, the price wave will peak in the second half of next week in the capital.

Indian summer instead of Eskimo winter

As we have already reported several times, the weather has gone completely crazy in our region, the weather in Europe has been upset by the arrival of Cyclone Boris, and the summer of a week ago has been replaced by cutting winds, and in some places torrential rain, threatening with the amount of rain for an entire season. Elsewhere – whether we look at Croatia or Slovenia, or Austria, where 60 cm has already fallen in some areas – the summer turned into snow, without any kind of transition.

However, according to the site síelők.hu, this is still nothing, the precipitation zone moves from south to north and east, and after Carinthia and East Tyrol, snow will also cover the northern provinces in the coming days. According to reports, many higher mountain roads and passes are only passable with snow chains. Based on the latest forecasts and high-resolution meteorological maps, between 12:00 noon on Saturday and 12:00 noon on Sunday, i.e. in a 24-hour time interval, we can prepare for extreme precipitation amounts from the eastern half of Tyrol to the Vienna Forest, where it will snow, there it can mean up to 150-200 centimeters. That is

But it also snowed in Croatia after the Mediterranean cyclone Boris hit the country, which caused snow in the village of Soboli on September 13. According to the Platak ski center’s webcam, snow fell continuously in the town on Friday. In addition, the landscape may turn white in several mountainous areas, and an orange alert is currently in effect in Croatia, so large amounts of rain and floods should also be expected on the coast of the Adriatic Sea.

It also snowed in the French mountains, especially on the northern side, where 10-25 centimeters of snow fell, and in Switzerland, 20-50 centimeters of snow were also reported by the papers, above 2500 meters in the central and eastern parts. At the measuring station Les Collines, located at an altitude of 2,022 meters, 69 centimeters of fresh snow was measured in the last 24 hours on Saturday.

They are also warning of snow and heavy precipitation in Germany – 90 centimeters of snow has already fallen on the Zugspitze this morning, other higher parts of Bavaria are also white – and in the higher parts of Northern Italy. In Italy, by the way, the eastern mountains received more snow than the Dolomites and the area around Tarvisio. A tragedy occurred in Val Gardena: a Canadian hiker was caught in a snowstorm and could not continue with his companion. The mountain rescuers could not intervene all night because of the weather, and by morning the Canadian had cooled down and they could only retrieve his body.

More and more videos of the judgment period are appearing on social media.

Several people have already died due to the rains and floods

Not only the extreme winter weather caused a surprise in Austria, but also the heavy rain and thunderstorms, which left thousands without electricity, according to information from the Kronen Zeitung: about 4,000 households in Styria were affected by power outages, and more are expected. There was a settlement where firefighters had to intervene about 71 times in one night.

In Romania, five people died and hundreds had to be evacuated due to the heavy rains and floods that occurred in the early hours of Saturday. The most damage was reported from Galac county.

According to the information, the sentencing period affected eight, mostly 19 settlements in the Moldavian county. More than 200 firefighters help in the rescue after the floods. The Romanian National Meteorological Service (ANM) warns of heavy rains in several counties of Romania on Saturday. In the counties of Botosani, Iasi and Vaslui, a second-degree alert is in effect until evening, and a first-degree alert is in effect in the northern part of the country.

Greece is also not spared by the floods, one of Athens’ pedestrian streets was flooded – this can also be seen in the footage that went viral on social media.

Crisis consultation in Austria: they are preparing for difficult days, a region has been declared a disaster area

The Austrian Kronen Zeitung wrote about Lower Austria being declared a disaster area.

Preparations for the flood have been underway in the state for several days. In addition to the creation of mobile protection systems, sandbags were filled and storage rooms were created. According to forecasts, water levels have risen recently. The most recent “floods of the century” were in August 2002 and June 2013 in Lower Austria, including on the Danube.

Federal Chancellor Karl Nehammer recently held a crisis consultation with experts in the Federal Chancellery and is in constant consultation with Interior Minister Gerhard Karner and Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner.

At the moment, almost all federal states are affected by extreme precipitation, in some cases snow. The coming days will therefore be a huge challenge for the fire brigade, civil defence, police and armed forces to help wherever help is needed

Nehammer said.
