On May 27, the written exams for the spring graduation period of the 2023/2024 school year ended in Italian. According to the Education Office (OH), approximately 112,700 students tested their knowledge in 1,161 locations on the 16 exam days.
The competition is not over yet, the graduation exam will continue with the advanced level between June 5th and 12th and the intermediate level orals between June 17th and July 3rd. Since the institutions provided the opportunity for the examinees to view the corrected worksheets in advance, the students are now aware of how many points they achieved in the written test and, in light of this, how much they have to do in the oral test.
The exact date and location of the oral exam is included in the exam invitation. If the exam convener is not available to the applicant, the exact date and location of the oral exam must be agreed with the institution receiving the matriculation application.
What happens if I fall behind?
Although most people do everything at this time in order not to miss the oral exam, in certain situations absenteeism is unavoidable. This issue is clarified by the relevant government decree as follows:
- “If the candidate does not appear for the oral exam for reasons beyond his control, or leaves the exam site with permission, or does not complete the exam that has begun with permission, the oral exam – if possible – with the director’s permission on the given exam day or the given exam period you can repeat it on another exam day, or if this is not possible, you can take a make-up exam in another exam period. Any event or circumstance that prevents participation in the exam, the occurrence of which cannot be traced back to the examinee’s intentional or careless behavior, is a non-excusable reason.”
- “If the examinee stays away from the oral exam for a blameworthy reason, or leaves the exam location without permission, or does not complete the exam that has started without permission, he/she may take a remedial exam in another exam period for the exam subjects for which he/she did not take the oral exam.”
Therefore, if the candidate does not appear for the oral exam, he must contact the head of the institution receiving his matriculation application with his request for the exam, the head of the institution will make a decision based on the submitted certificates.
It is also stated in the exam regulations: the provisions concerning the oral exam must also be applied to the practical exam, if the task must be presented and performed once and the performance must be evaluated based on this. This type of exam is, for example, the practical part of physical education.
Replacement is not a good deal
If the examinee is unable to give an evaluable answer based on the material of the drawn item in the oral exam, i.e. the evaluation of his answer does not reach 12 percent of the total points that can be awarded for the oral exam, the president will draw an extra item with him once. In this case, your oral score is created from the points you received for the supplementary item, by halving the points received and rounding the amount to a whole point, if necessary.
If the candidate achieves a result of over 12 percent in the oral exam, this does not mean that he will not fail the given exam subject, because the 25 percent result required for passing must be achieved based on the total score achieved in the written and oral exam.
The items
The schools themselves decide on the items of the intermediate level exams, so there may be differences. At the same time, the advanced level oral exam is uniform everywhere, and the course titles are determined centrally.
As we wrote about it several times before during the written period: in 2024, a new era will begin in Hungarian education, as this year students will be able to meet the reformed matriculation exams. The reason for this is that in 2024, the most important high school exam has arrived for those who started their studies in 2020 according to the new National Core Curriculum.
The change also affects the oral ones, for example, the six compulsory works of life from Hungarian (Dezsső Kosztolányi, Mihály Babits, József Attila, János Arany, Sándor Petőfi, Endre Ady) have been expanded with new writers and poets, Mór Jókai, Kálmán Mikszáth, Mihály Vörösmarty have been added to the list and also Ferenc Herczeg.
For the biology and chemistry matriculation exams – both at the intermediate and advanced level – it has remained unchanged that in the first part of the exam the items are on the stage, but in the second part, instead of the practical task, the students can also present project work.
- It is possible to achieve 50 points in the Hungarian and history exams at intermediate and advanced levels.
- In mathematics, the maximum possible score is 50 at the intermediate level and 35 at the advanced level.
- In the foreign language exams, 33 points are available at the intermediate level and 30 points at the advanced level.
This is how the result is revealed
The date and location of the results announcement meeting is included in the exam invitation. This is where the documents issued on the results of the matriculation exam are handed over to the examinees. Every candidate receives some kind of document from the matriculation exam: a certificate, a certificate or an extract from the birth certificate.
If the candidate is unable to go to the result announcement meeting and does not give authorization to anyone to receive the documents, he/she must consult with the institution receiving the graduation application regarding the receipt of the graduation document.
