Index – Abroad – Russia’s war in Ukraine – Index’s Thursday news summary

US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said on March 7 that the current deadlock in US aid to Ukraine is “nothing but a gift to Russian President Vladimir Putin” and other US adversaries, The Kyiv Independent reported.

Aid to Ukraine and other US allies has been stalled in Congress for months due to domestic political disputes.

The US Senate passed a foreign aid bill containing $60 billion in aid to Ukraine on February 13, but House Speaker Mike Johnson has yet to bring it up for a vote despite pressure from the Senate and the White House.

As the White House continues to falter, Russia gains ground and Ukraine is forced to ration ammunition and supplies

Yellen said before the bilateral meeting with German Economy Minister Robert Habeck in Washington.

“The White House must act and demonstrate the strength of US support for Ukraine in the face of Putin’s aggression,” he added.

Yellen’s words echo those of other US officials who have argued that the congressional impasse contributed to Ukraine’s loss of the key frontline city of Avgyiivka.

John Kirby, a spokesman for the US National Security Council, said recently that Putin is taking advantage of the delay in US aid to Ukraine to further increase Russian military efforts.

US Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer warned during his visit to Lviv in February that Ukraine would lose the war threatens him without American help.

According to internal US estimates in February, the munitions shortage in Ukraine, exacerbated by delays in US aid, “could effectively turn the tide of the war and give Putin a significant advantage”.
