A 60-second video of the sinking of the Bayesian luxury yacht, captured by a villa owner’s surveillance camera, has surfaced online recently, giving the impression that the ship disappeared overnight under a dark sky off the coast of Sicily, but the According to the Italian newspaper Corriere Della Sera, the sinking of the ship was not so fast.
The paper reported that the tragedy began at 3:50 a.m. on Monday, and the crew then fought for 16 minutes to keep the ship afloat and save the lives of the passengers. The last minutes of the luxury yacht were reconstructed thanks to the Ais tracking system.
As they write, the Ais tracking system, which creates a connection between the ship’s onboard instruments and shore stations, accurately mapped the ship’s route even in the most tragic moments – right up to the very end. “Essentially, this is a disaster map,” said the author.
It was sixteen minutes to secure themselves, to sound the alarm, to try to avoid the sinking, and above all, for those who slept in the cabins farthest from the exits, sixteen minutes to realize that death was waiting for them, the between the waves, the very strong wind and the ever-lowering water
says the paper.
Sixteen minutes of pure terror
According to Corriere Della Sera, the route reconstructed by the tracker is one of the documents obtained by the prosecutor’s office in Termini Imerese. The Italian Sea Group also has the documentation for the route. They were the ones who used the available data to calculate the Bayesian movement, time, wind strength and rotation of the yacht from the appearance of the water funnel until the luxury yacht submerged. “Sixteen minutes of pure terror,” added the author.
3:50 a.m.: The critical time had arrived, the hurricane was strong, the wind was rapidly increasing, and the Bayesian was beginning to sway dangerously. The tracking system painted a picture of this moment that graphically resembled a small child’s scribble: the sailboat moved back and forth, then sideways, then back and forth again.
Those scribbled marks on the paper reveal that the yacht was like a dog on a chain: tied to the anchor, unable to escape from danger. After a few minutes, “it can be seen that there is no anchor left to hold”
– they assessed the situation.
At that time the anchor no longer held, and the ship, although free, was not in a condition to withstand the wind. At 3:59 a.m. there was a change of direction, again dictated by the wind.
4:00 a.m.: this is when the yacht began to take on so much water that it became unmanageable. The ship was then completely at the mercy of the storm, and there was also a power cut, which was a sign that the water had reached the generator area or the engine room. Six minutes left. At four o’clock in the morning, another slight change of direction took place.
Four o’clock in the morning: after drifting 358 meters, the Bayesian disappeared from the horizon. Moments later, the “EPIRB”, a type of GPS that acts as an emergency device, sent an automatic alert to the Coast Guard-operated “Cospas Sarsat” satellite station that it had sunk.
Twenty-two passengers were on board
As we previously reported, the luxury sailing yacht sailing under the British flag sank in Porticello near Palermo early Monday. Twenty-two people were on board the vehicle, seven of whom died.
59-year-old Mike Lynch, the founder of Autonomy Corporation, owner of the yacht, was celebrating his acquittal of fraud charges when the 56-meter yacht disaster occurred. The cause of the tragedy was a water funnel, which is the water equivalent of a tornado.
The competent authorities started the rescue within a short time. However, the divers’ work was hampered by several factors, including furniture and other objects floating in the hull blocking the way to the interior of the wreck on the seabed.
A fatal victim was found out a few hours after the tragedy, according to the news, he was Recaldo Thomas, the ship’s cook. Six people were treated as missing, but by Wednesday morning divers had found five more bodies.
The last victim was found on Thursday evening. She was 18-year-old Hannah Lynch, the daughter of billionaire tech entrepreneur Mich Lynch. His father is also among the victims, his body was brought up from the seabed on Thursday.
The yacht’s captain, James Cutfield, spoke for the first time on Tuesday morning. James Catfield, who is currently recovering in the emergency room at Termini Imerese, said just one sentence, according to La Repubblica: “We didn’t see this coming,” Sky News quoted the captain as saying.
The captain’s brother Mark Cutfield said his brother was a “very good sailor” who was “highly respected” in the Mediterranean. According to him, his brother is currently being treated in the hospital, but is “fine” and has no serious injuries.
A homicide investigation has been launched
Today, the Italian prosecutor’s office held a press conference in connection with the disaster, where it was announced that a manslaughter investigation had been launched into the death of seven people, including British technology magnate Mike Lynch and his daughter Hannah, reports the Guardian.
Ambrogio Cartosio, the prosecutor of the city of Termini Imerese, said at a press conference at the city’s court on Saturday that his office had opened a preliminary investigation into homicide. He added that investigations are being conducted against unknown persons.
It was recalled that the bodies of Morgan Stanley International bank president Jonathan Bloomer, his wife Judy, and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife Neda were also found among the wreckage.
The bodies of six people were recovered from cabins on the left side of the yacht after the ship sank, the head of the Palermo fire department said.
