in Viterbo over 100 accesses in one day

The emergency rooms in the Viterbo area are under pressure. Influenza and Covid are putting doctors, nurses and social-health workers who work in emergency departments to the test. The data from yesterday’s early afternoon gave a challenging picture: 101 admissions to the Belcolle emergency room, of which 33 were hospitalized and 11 waiting to be examined. There were two admissions to Acquapendente, 11 to the Andosilla in Civita Castellana (of which 4 under observation and one hospitalized) and 11 again to the Tarquinia hospital (one hospitalized).

The majority of patients who crowd the wards these days are elderly people who already have other pathologies to which flu viruses and coronavirus infections are being added. As explained to the Messaggero in recent days by Dr. Silvia Aquilani, director of Sisp, the Hygiene and Public Health Service, other viruses are circulating more than Covid: influenza, parainfluenza and syncytial (this especially affects children, causing bronchiolitis). These are the respiratory pathologies that most afflict the people of Viterbo these days and which are on the rise significantly. In any case, symptomatic patients who access the emergency room are subjected to a swab test in order to direct them, if positive, to antiviral therapy. A contingency common to all of Italy in this period, aggravated by the shortage of personnel given the difficulty of finding doctors willing to work in the emergency room (especially in places close to Rome, such as the hospitals in Tuscia), as demonstrated by the continuous calls for applications which have gone almost empty and by the use of external cooperatives to cover shifts.

That the trend was increasing is also demonstrated by the “Business Plan for the management of hospitalization flow and overcrowding in the emergency room”, recently approved by the Viterbo Local Health Authority. According to the report, in 2022 compared to 2021, accesses grew by approximately 11%. Out of a total of arrivals which from 1 January to 31 December 2022 were 39,176, the increase compared to 2021 in absolute numbers is 3,919 patients . Regarding the outcomes, 50.6% were sent home, 21.1 were hospitalized, 6.7 were sent to outpatient facilities and 6.5 refused hospitalization. But what emerges is above all a continuously rising trend: from 1 January 2023 to 6 July 2023, 20,598 patients turned to the Belcolle emergency room, from 4 July 2023 to 7 December 2023 another 19,600 patients, for a total of 40,198 patients , 1,022 more than the full year of 2022, an average of an additional 2.8 per day. And with these numbers 2024 will be even worse.
