In Torreón they want to turn the Costco parking lot into a forest

In the midst of the drought that the region is experiencing, environmental issues have been promoted and the importance of trees to mitigate the heat has been promoted, which is why, through Change.org, residents of the city of Torreón are requesting that in the designated area to the store parking lot, trees are planted.

It was at the end of 2023 that the arrival of Costco to the Lagunera region was announced, which will make an investment of more than 1,100 million pesos and will represent the largest price club store in the country of the Costco chain.

In addition to the store, the 5,823-acre plot of land is also intended to be used for building a gas station.

“Although we do not know the number of parking spaces that will be built, this petition seeks that Costco Mexico comply with the provisions of Rule 7 of the Urban Development and Construction Regulations of Torreón, which mentions that “For each parking lot, which is located at level and uncovered, a tree must be planted for every two parking spaces.” Additionally, we request that the trees planted be native to the region, such as mesquites and huizaches.”

“The presence of trees in urban areas brings with it many benefits to the environment, biodiversity and the health and well-being of people. In parking lots, trees can reduce ambient temperatures, increase the useful life of pavements and reduce evaporative fuel emissions.”

The petition has just over 500 signatures, although beyond the signatures the petition seeks to generate awareness and conversation regarding the high temperatures experienced in the region and how improving the environment can help reduce it.
