“Thanks to vaccination, smallpox no longer exists. “Now we can easily prevent many diseases, such as measles and pneumonia, which were once widespread.”

Publik.az reports that Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director general of the World Health Organization (WHO), said this at the WHO’s weekly press conference.

He added that 84 percent of children in the world are vaccinated against diphtheria, tetanus and whooping cough in three doses:

“For 50 years, vaccination programs have been created with the support of WHO and its partners. Millions of children, adolescents and adults have been helped to obtain various vaccines. According to studies, vaccination is estimated to have saved at least 154 million lives since 1974. These vaccines save 8,000 lives a day. “Thanks to vaccination, the probability of a child born today reaching the age of 5 is 40 percent higher than a child born 50 years ago.”

The Director-General also called on world leaders to support and fund vaccination programs that provide vaccines and life-saving products.
