There are quarantined classes in several metropolitan schools because of whooping cough. The affected schools in Sofia are a little more than five and less than 10 in number, the Acting Minister of Education Prof. Galin Tsokov told bTV on Saturday.

“For pregnant women, the recommendation is clear and categorical – to be vaccinated against whooping cough in the last trimester of pregnancy, so that during the development of antibodies against the disease, they can pass to the fetus through the placenta. According to her, it is good to discuss a change in Bulgaria’s immunization calendar, since the last revaccination against whooping cough is at the age of 12. “We do not have permanent lifelong immunity to whooping cough. It is recommended to revaccinate every 10 years”commented Bacelova.

According to Dr. Alexander Simidchiev, we currently have at least 2,000 patients with whooping cough, because the death rate for whooping cough is purely statistically 1 per 1,000 sufferers.

“The fact that we have 2 deaths means that we have at least 2,000 sick people”he stated.

A day ago, the chief state health inspector explained that a large part of the cases are in immunized persons whose immunity has declined, but their disease is relatively mild. This is the reason why doctors do not refer patients to be tested for whooping cough, and tests are undertaken in people with severe persistent cough.
