At least 34 people have died after consuming toxic alcohol in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. This is reported from the BBC.

The incident took place in Kalakuruchi area, where some residents had deteriorated after consuming alcoholic beverages on the night of June 18. About 80 people were hospitalized. Their symptoms include dizziness, headache, vomiting, nausea, stomach pain and eye inflammation.

Two people were arrested. In addition, the authorities suspended a senior police official and 10 employees who control the smuggling of illegal liquor in the state for negligence.

Illegal alcohol producers often add methanol, a highly toxic type of alcohol, which increases the booze. Even in small amounts, methanol can cause blindness, liver damage, and death.

Dozens of people die every year in India due to consumption of illegal liquor.
