In consultation, judicial reform | The Century of Torreón

Before the opening of the discussion of the reform of the Judiciary that has generated the fall of the peso against the dollar, the virtual president-elect of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, assured that there is economic stability so national and international investors do not have to worry. for this initiative that is expected to be discussed in September.

In that sense, Claudia Sheinbaum said that she is going to propose that a survey be carried out on what citizens think about the Judiciary.

In the same line as the President of the Republic, Sheinbaum Parto stressed that there is economic stability, so private initiative should not worry.

The virtual president-elect assured that the investments “are safe within the framework of the laws. They do not have to be concerned about a reform of the Judiciary, because finally a better justice system will be built.”

However, given the call for dialogue for judicial reform, the majority of the plenary session of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation maintains its rejection.

The Court’s opposition has occurred through various forums at the end of 2023, where they have focused their rejection of the plan for judges, magistrates and ministers to be elected by direct vote of the citizens.

The robes consider that this measure would break with the collaboration between powers and the stability in the position of the judges.

They have accused of regression and centrism if the structure of the Supreme Court is modified and its presiding minister, Norma Lucía Piña Hernández, assured that the Supreme Court will not give up “not one millimeter in the progress made by our constitutional democracy in favor of judicial independence.” ..

It should be noted that Ministers Yasmín Esquivel Mossa and Lenia Batres Guadarrama have spoken about the urgency of a structural reform of the Judicial Branch of the Federation, but not about the election of judges.

Contrary to the positions of the ministers, the National Association of Circuit Magistrates and District Judges of the Judicial Branch of the Federation (JUFED) gave its approval this Tuesday to the opening of a “public discussion” to address the judicial constitutional reform that proposes the president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

“JUFED is open to dialogue, because it recognizes that the judicial power is part of the constitutional democratic system that must govern in Mexico,” the judges explained.

The association thus softened its position after having been very critical about it at first, when it called the Government’s proposal an “absolute interference in judicial independence that leads to the impact of the human rights of Mexicans.”
