The Haor Bachao Sunamganj Bachao Andolan organized a protest rally in solidarity with the aggrieved farmers as the work of the Haor Dam was not completed even after extended time.
On Thursday (March 7) morning in front of the office of Sunamganj District Lawyers Association, the leaders of farmers’ organization of Haor participated in the protest rally as well as people from different professions.
The leaders of the Haor Bachao movement said in the rally that according to the policy, the Sunamganj dam was supposed to be completed on February 28, but the time for the second phase has passed. Many Howre dams have not been completed yet. Due to the indifference and negligence of the pubo in charge of the dam and the concerned administration, the farmers of Haor are in fear of early floods as the dam work is not completed even after extended time. If the dam work is not completed before the rains, there is a risk of crop loss in Haor Dubi. The speakers warned to call for agitation along with the farmers in case of crop loss in Haor.
Chittaranjan Talukder, Vice President of Haor Bachao Andolan Central Committee, General Secretary Bijan Sen Roy, Bar Association President Nazrul Islam Sepu, Haor Bachao Andolan District Committee President Yakub Bahlul, Ramendra Talukder Mintu, AK Kudrat Pasha, Advocate Burhan Uddin Dolon and others spoke at the protest rally. .
In the current year, out of 137 upazilas of Sunamganj, 38 out of 137 upazilas started the work of 598 km dam in 733 parts at a cost of 130 crores on December 15.
