Implementation of new hydro-agricultural infrastructure

These infrastructures make it possible to irrigate 1,287 ha.

Major development and rehabilitation works on hydro-agricultural infrastructure as well as irrigation networks were carried out in the Betroka district, in the Anosy region. The establishment of these new hydro-agricultural infrastructures contributes to the improvement of irrigated areas with a total area of 1,287 ha distributed in 4 zones, namely Ianabinda, Bekorobo, Ambondrokidy and Antanimarina. These infrastructures meet the required technical standards while guaranteeing better irrigation of agricultural operations.

Additional surface area

More than 800 producers grouped within several water user associations directly benefit from these new installations. They are responsible for the management and maintenance of these hydro-agricultural networks. Thanks to this water control, farmers can now grow two rice crops each year. This will contribute to improving productivity yields while ensuring food security in the southern part of Madagascar. Furthermore, these new hydro-agricultural infrastructures will make it possible to irrigate and exploit an additional surface area of 745 hectares, thus strengthening the agricultural potential of the Anosy region.

Population resilience

It should be noted that these infrastructures were carried out by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock through the implementation of the MIONJO project or Support for resilient livelihoods in the South of Madagascar. It is a development initiative launched in 2020 by the Malagasy government with funding from the World Bank through the International Development Association. This project aims to strengthen the resilience of the population in the South in the face of climatic shocks such as drought, while boosting their livelihoods through support for agriculture, fishing and other value chains and local economic activities.
