Chief Jailer Ashraful Islam has been accused of physically torturing, molesting and beating a woman Hajti by introducing men into the women’s unit after seeing immoral activities inside the Gaibandha District Jail.
The mother of the victim filed a complaint with the Deputy Commissioner on Tuesday (April 16) seeking the punishment of the accused in the incident.
The victim has been in the Gaibandha District Jail for five years, the charge sheet states.
In the complaint, the victim’s mother mentioned that a woman prisoner (writer) had an illicit relationship with Ashraful Islam, the chief jailer working in the district jail. The chief jailer Ashraful and the inmate got angry with him when the victim saw the matter. He threatened that if he told anyone about the immoral relationship between the two, he would be killed and died of a heart attack.
It is also said that Ashraful Islam harassed the victim several times by giving bad suggestions. Jailer Ashraful used to say that Jail Superintendent is his man. He spent his own money and transferred the jailer.
In the written complaint, the victim’s mother also said that on March 20 afternoon led by Ashraful Islam, inmates Meghla Khatun, Rehena, Alefa and prison guards Tahmina, Shabana Gongra were beaten up. At one stage, Ashraful, CID Anich and Habildar Mustafa entered the women’s unit of the prison, handcuffed her with both hands and tied her with a rope and beat her severely on her thighs and legs. During this time, the clothes were torn and stripped. It is mentioned in the complaint that death threats were given if this incident was disclosed.
Accused Ashraful Islam’s phone was called to find out about this. As soon as he received the journalist’s identity, he cut the connection saying that he was ill.
Gaibandha Jail Super. Javed Mehdi said that no action can be taken until the investigation is done.
In response to a question, he said, I will take measures in all matters. You just help me a little.
Confirming the complaint, Gaibandha Deputy Commissioner Kazi Nahid Rasul told Jago News that Additional District Magistrate Moshiur Rahman has been sent to jail to investigate the matter. The matter is under investigation. If the complaint is proved after the investigation, legal action will be taken against the accused person.
