‘Immobilized by pain after antibiotic reported by AIFA’ – News

“Someone help me get well and the appeal I address to the Minister of Health Schillaci and the Minister for Disabilities Locatelli is that the State does not leave me alone in this odyssey, because my life is destroyed”: speaking to ANSA is Fabrizio Gentili, 47 years old, married and father of two daughters, teacher of physics and mathematics at the “Galilei” scientific high school in Macerata. “My ordeal of physical and moral pain – says the man from Serrapetrona, but who has lived in Tolentino (Macerata) since the earthquake 7 years ago – begins in July 2022, when I took an antibiotic from the fluoroquinolone family following of a urinary tract infection” “Drug that is prescribed to me by the family doctor on the recommendation of the urologist” on which, however, there is a 2019 AIFA alert, for “adverse reactions, including serious and disabling ones, to the musculoskeletal system and to the nervous system”.

Due to the severity of such reactions in previously healthy subjects, AIFA had recommended maximum caution in prescribing. “I, who was a super athlete, found myself in a wheelchair within a few weeks of taking it – says the teacher -. The side effects of the antibiotic all manifested themselves with great violence on the tendons of my body, on to the point of not being able to stand or even support my arms, so much so that my wife was forced to feed me.” “I begin a long wandering around the hospitals of the Marche and also outside the region, but no one has ever certified to me that my state of health was strictly related to the unwanted effects of the antibiotic” and according to Gentili this “in fact prevents me from accessing any form of health care”.

“After 17 months of illness and therefore with a significantly reduced salary – he adds -, from now on I will also have to deal with a complicated economic situation”. “I turn to the ministers to help me find a path that will allow me to recover, I know that there are experimental treatments but they are very expensive, so I hope that the State does not abandon me”, says the teacher again. At the moment Gentili has not taken any legal action and hopes that the National Health Service and therefore the institutions will take charge of his story: “In my condition I discovered there is an army of several thousand people in Italy, we cannot be forgotten in our ordeal”, concludes the professor.
