IMF agrees to support Milei’s effort to stabilize Argentina

The managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kristalina Georgieva, said today that the organization remains committed to supporting the efforts of ultraliberal President Javier Milei to reestablish stability in Argentina’s economy.

Georgieva met with Milei during the G7 summit in Italy, a day after the organization approved the eighth review of the extended facilities agreement, paving the way for Argentina to access $800 million.

The South American country, which is facing a severe economic crisis, has a 44 billion dollar program with the IMFthe largest in the history of the organization.

Milei was invited to the summit of the seven most industrialized countries in the world by the Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, host of the event held in the city of Fasano, where the Argentine president spoke on “Artificial Intelligence and Energy.”

After greeting Biden for the first time since taking office in December, Milei was scheduled to meet with French President Emmanuel Macron; with Meloni, and with the head of the World Bank, Ajay Banga.

Although it is not on the official agenda released by Argentina, part of the attention at the summit will focus on a possible meeting with Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the president of Brazil, an important trading partner that Milei has repeatedly criticized.

His compatriot Pope Francis is also participating in the G7, although a meeting with Milei is not planned either, although they exchanged greetings at the meeting.

The president will travel to Switzerland on Saturday to participate in the Global Peace Summit in Ukraine and will hold a bilateral meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, who will present him with the “Order of Freedom” decoration.

Argentina joined the Ukraine Defense Contact Group (UDCG) on Friday, an international coalition of 54 countries that coordinates humanitarian and military aid to Ukraine, the Argentine Ministry of Defense reported.
