“I’m leaving this world on Friday the 30th”: Young man requested euthanasia after contracting a bacteria

MEXICO CITY (apro).- Javier Acosta, a 36-year-old Colombian who suffers from osteomyelitis, shared in a video on Facebook that, after five years of battling the disease, he made the decision to resort to euthanasia.

In an emotional video, Javier shared that this Friday, August 30, at 12 noon, he will be euthanized, which consists of giving him an injection that will not cause him any pain.

“I am leaving this world on Friday, August 30th at 12:00 noon.”

According to his testimony, Javier contracted the bacteria in a swimming pool, which caused an infection that reached his bones and blood, causing leukemia.

“The bacteria is a yeast that feeds on even the antibiotics themselves. Right now I am on three antibiotics,” he said in the video.

He argued that he requested euthanasia for himself and his family, since one alternative that the doctors offered him was to amputate his leg, which he rejected because it did not guarantee the elimination of the disease and compromised his quality of life, as well as that of his daughter.

“I like to move. So, imagining my life without my legs, in a bed, on antibiotics, watching my daughter take care of me, losing her chance to have a childhood, a youth, I said ‘I want euthanasia’.”

In Colombia, it is legal to apply euthanasia to people who are experiencing severe pain and who suffer from a terminal illness that will cause death in a short period of time.
