The website “Delfi.lv” announced that javelin thrower Madara Saidī-Ndure (formerly Palameika) and Ikauniece have ended their professional sports careers.
“An athlete’s career is very special for an athlete, and no one, except the athlete himself, decides to end it,” Ikauniece said on his Instagram account.
“I am undergoing rehabilitation and if someone has to decide to end their career, the decision should be mine, not some journalist’s,” Ikauniece says.
After a long rehabilitation, Ikauniece returned to competition in 2022, but failed to qualify for the European Championship and has not competed since.
Ikauniece is the bronze medalist of the 2015 Beijing World Championships and the silver medalist of the 2012 European Masters. She has competed in two Olympics, taking fourth place in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro.
Ikauniece holds the Latvian record in indoor heptathlon (6815 points) and indoor pentathlon (4701 points).
