IJssel blocked for shipping due to stranded vessel | Domestic

WESTERVOORT – A ship is stuck on the IJssel near Westervoort, preventing other vessels from passing. This was confirmed by a spokesperson for the Rijkswaterstaat after reporting from Omroep Gelderland.

According to the spokesperson it is a large ship. It is “so at odds” with the IJsselkop east of Arnhem, where the river originates as a branch of the Rhine, that it completely blocks the entrance to the IJssel. The Rijkswaterstaat spokesman said at least two boats remained stranded behind the stranded vessel. According to her, all skippers have been informed about the blockade.

The spokesperson also said that the salvage of the vessel is currently underway, but it is not possible to say how long it will take to remove the vessel. According to her, this may take longer due to rising water levels.

It is unclear how the ship got stuck, the Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate will investigate this.
