Ignacio Mier calls to approve pension reform; He assures that he does not touch the Afore

Deputy Ignacio Mier Velazco, coordinator of the Morena Parliamentary Group, reiterated his call to the opposition to approve the creation of the Pension Fund for Wellbeing and assured that the project does not affect the Afores, and on the contrary “protects the savings of workers to guarantee decent pensions”.

“It is generous, it is supportive, it is complementary, it is a fund that dignifies the lives of workers. The Afores are not touched: neither by the administrators nor by parties, governments, by anyone, that belongs to the workers and has great value significant because it has to do with old age, with a decent pension for them,” he noted.

The parliamentary leader stressed that the reform is not an electoral measure, but of social justice and dignity for more than 45 million workers who saw the consequences of the modifications to the Law of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) in 1997 and in 2006, of the Law of the Institute of Security and Social Services of State Workers (ISSSTE).

“The pension system, in the world, has always been a challenge,” he said, recalling that in 2020 he led the reform of the Afores, IMSS and ISSSTE laws in order to reduce contributions from 1,250 weeks to the workers, to 750 and grow maximum to 1 thousand. In addition to the above, the commissions paid for having an individual account in the Afores decreased significantly.

When talking about the consequences of the 1997 and 2006 reforms, He stated that currently they are seeking to make pensions larger and enough to cover the needs of retired people.

Due to the above, he explained, it was proposed to create the Pension Fund for Wellbeing in order to strengthen and complement the decent pension. He assured that it is about achieving social justice for workers without financing from committed fiscal resources and under the administration of a public trust.

Finally, the coordinator of the Morena bench invited the opposition to read the initiative and vote in favor“for the benefit of the workers of Mexico.”
