A new volcanic eruption occurred yesterday on the Reikjanes peninsula, in southwestern Iceland, announced the Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO), shortly after authorities evacuated, again, the nearby city of Grindavík.
An eruption has begun near Sundhnúksgígar, north of Grindavík,” the institute reported in a statement, about three weeks after the end of a previous eruption that had begun on March 16. It is the fifth eruption in the region since December.
The lava plumes reached a height of at least 50 meters,” OMI wrote on its website and reported “intense seismic activity” before the eruption yesterday.
Eruptions in the same area in December, January and February led to the evacuation of almost 4,000 inhabitants from the small port city of Grindavík, affected by lava, in November.
The area had remained dormant for almost 800 years until early 2020, when intense seismic activity began on the peninsula, and the magma emerged in 2021. The current eruption is already at least the sixth since then.
One of the most disturbing volcanic events in the Nordic country’s recent history occurred in 2010, when the Eyjafjallajokull volcano erupted with an explosion that released a plume of ash so enormous that it paralyzed air traffic across Europe for weeks, causing the cancellation of 100 thousand flights and affected more than 10 million people.
