After missing out on first place at ‘The Best FIFA Football Awards’, Erling Haaland was voted best player of 2023 at the ‘Globe Soccer Awards’ in Dubai, but it was another star who got all the attention: Cristiano Ronaldo. In his own way, CR7 has silenced the criticism once again. “The Saudi league is already better than Ligue 1.”
Cristiano Ronaldo won three awards at the “Globe Soccer Awards” in Dubai. The Portuguese was voted the best player in the Middle East and fans’ favorite player and received the Maradona award, the trophy for the player who scored the most goals in the calendar year 2023. CR7 scored 54 goals for Al-Nassr and Portugal – no one did better. Not even Erling Haaland, even though he was voted best player. “Deserved,” Ronaldo readily admitted.
Yet it was CR7 who stole the show in Dubai. For the umpteenth time he openly lashed out at criticism. “This is just part of the job. I’ve been working at the highest level for 22 years and it has only made me a better player and a better father. I like people who doubt me. Every time I want to prove them wrong. Last year I did a little less well, but in 2023 I played very well.”
And then give Haaland a little chance. “At 38 I scored more goals than youngsters like Haaland. I’m almost 39 and still look great. Haaland couldn’t suppress the audience’s smiles.

And Ronaldo’s great show didn’t stop there. The Portuguese also criticized the Saudi championship, where CR7 scored most of his goals. “To be honest, I don’t think the Saudi championship is worse than the French one. In France there are two or three good teams, but here in my opinion it is more competitive. People can say what they want, but this is my opinion and I know what I’m talking about. I think our championship is already stronger than Ligue 1. And we continue to improve.”
Ronaldo had spoken about it before: he will turn 39 on February 5th. Yet the Portuguese doesn’t seem to be slowing down. During the ceremony he was also asked how long he wanted to continue. “I still don’t know when I’ll stop. Maybe within ten years.”

De Bruyne also in the awards
Who was also present in Dubai: Kevin De Bruyne. The Red Devil received the trophy as the best team of 2023 together with their Manchester City teammates. The Citizens obviously owe it to the year in which they won the treble (Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup).
