I WAIT. Aderrien (11 years old) is hit with his hands raised by the officer calling himself | Abroad

“Show me your hands! Show me your hands!” This is a police intervention, as we have often seen in the news and on television. But then an eleven-year-old boy is shot in his house while he raises his hands in the air.

They are very harsh images, the recordings made by the bodycam of agent Greg Capers on the evening of May 20, 2023, in Indianola (Mississippi). In reality it was Aderrien Murry himself who called the police. His mother asked him when an ex-boyfriend of his passed by.

When the officers arrive, they ask the control center for permission to break down the door. If it doesn’t work right away, the mother comes to open the door. She reports that the suspect is still inside, whereupon Capers asks him to come out. Getting no response, he enters with his gun drawn and orders the suspect to put down all his weapons.

I shoot

When Aderrien approaches with his hands in the air, Capers immediately shoots him. The boy stays in hospital for five days, but it doesn’t matter if he doesn’t live to tell the tale. “A collapsed lung, broken ribs, a ruptured liver – this guy was almost on the verge of losing his life,” his lawyer Carlos Moore said.

In addition to the physical injuries, the boy also suffers serious mental and emotional blows. “He will never trust the police again. He wanted to become a police officer himself one day until that happened.

No punishment

Aderrien’s family is calling for the officer to be fired, but he only has to spend time on unpaid leave and has been working as an officer again since December. “We want him to be held accountable in some sort of criminal court, local, state or federal,” Moore said. “He must pay for what he did and not be able to do it to anyone again.”

The family is asking for 5 million dollars (4.6 million euros) from the municipality of Indianola, the police chief and Capers. “He was so brazen and rude,” Moore says. “How could a well thought out and trained officer shoot first and then watch? I mean, this guy came out with his hands up!
