He has dominated the field for the orange jersey holders for a large part of his career. Faisal Mahmood retired two years ago as a sports teacher at Scholastica School and was having a good time. The former midfielder suddenly got a call when his beloved club Brothers Union was promoted again this season. Starting from player to assistant coach for the first time, it did not last long. He was able to stand in the dugout in two matches.
After seeing the condition of the club, Faisal had to leave the dugout after only one month! The youngest footballer who won the 2003 victory is not less sorry about it. The conditions inside the orange jersey holders are so bad that it is difficult to get a favorable environment for coaching. Somehow, after sweating with the disciples for a month, it was not possible to stay any longer. Since there was no head coach at the beginning, all the responsibilities were on Faisal.
And the once traditional team is now languishing under Gambian coach Omar Sis. Meanwhile, ‘A’ license holder Ajmal Hossain didn’t stay long with electricity duty. Brothers are moving towards relegation with 7 points. Why did Faisal leave the team after coaching for a month? When asked such a question, the 39-year-old former midfielder told the Bangla Tribune, ‘Brothers Union is one of my favorite clubs. I have played in this club for many years. I have no less admiration for the club. But when I come to work, I see that there is nothing right here. A lot of what a premier club should have or do has been lacking. So I was forced to work for a few days.’
Faisal played during Brothers’ relegation from the league two seasons ago. Reza Parkas was the coach of Iran at that time. Faisal opined that the current situation is worse than that time, ‘The last time I played there were many problems but everything ended at one stage. But when I came to work, I saw that many things were not right. Eating, living or exercising. There are problems everywhere. I did not talk about the remuneration. If this is the case, you will not be able to go far with a team.’
AFC ‘B’ lines coach Faisal’s coaching did not start well at all. So he said with regret, ‘I never thought that I would be pushed like this at the beginning of my coaching career. I came to work at the club as one of the coaching staff with high hopes. But I couldn’t deal with myself anymore. How far can you go with the team if there is mismanagement in everything. See the club now heading for relegation. If it had been taken care of from the beginning, the disaster might not have been seen.’
But Faisal doesn’t want to stop here even after getting a shock in coaching this season. In his 21-year football career, apart from Brothers, he played for Mohammedan, Sheikh Russell and Muktijoddha. 21 years ago in Dhaka, the member who won the victory also played in the red-green team for several years. Enrolled in coaching after retirement but wants to move forward even if initial experience is not good.
Faisal himself said, ‘I will take this license course in the near future. If given the opportunity, I would like to work on the field for any other club. I have come so far from being a footballer. So there is also a desire to give something to football. Let’s see what happens next!’
