Caricature Museum Krems honors the exceptional artist with a large anniversary exhibition.
Krems (OTS) – On Manfred Deix’s 75th birthday, the Krems Caricature Museum is dedicating an anniversary exhibition to the artist, who died in 2016. The show opens on Saturday, February 17th with the title “I Love Deix”.
„No other Austrian cartoonist caused such a sensation as Manfred Deix. He attacked hard and mercilessly with his pen. At the same time, it was almost an honor to be caricatured by Deix. It wasn’t just familiar faces that were targeted. The cartoons affect each and every one of us. As a mirror in front of your face, they invite you to reconcile yourself with your own imperfections

Manfred Deix (1949 – 2016) was an artistic multi-talented graphic artist, cartoonist and poet at the same time. With his art he provoked, shocked and shook up social taboos like no Austrian artist had ever done before. Deix’s works have been featured in magazines and newspapers such as Profile, Trend, Mirror, Star, Playboy, Die Zeit, Titanic or News published. In addition to countless solo exhibitions and publications, the term Deixfigur in Duden and the first full-length animated film from Austria “ROTZBUB – the DEIX Film” (2021) bear witness to the popularity of the Lower Austrian native. Deix, alongside Gustav Peichl alias IRONIMUS, is considered a co-founder of the Krems Caricature Museum.
Objects with cult status
„ Our anniversary exhibition is an ode to the artistic multi-talent Manfred Deix. From favorite motifs and works that have not been shown for a long time to illustrated poems and Deix figures, the show depicts the diverse work of the animal lover and passionate smoker. With over 160 objects on display, Deix fans will get their money’s worth in the Krems Caricature Museum in 2024

After a long time, the popular “Cat King” in the red fur coat and the equally well-known “nude dancer Fritzi Lichtermann” are returning to the exhibition area of the Krems Caricature Museum. Various contemporaries such as Hermann Nitsch and Jörg Haider are repeatedly encountered in Deix’s work. Based on words and images, the show explores Deix’s understanding of humor. Excerpts from “ROTZBUB – the DEIX Film” illustrate how the Deix phenomenon works today. The life-size Deix figure “Heinz with the Ivory Horn” or the cult figure “Hudriwudri” guarantee a humorous visit to the exhibition.

An excursion complements the anniversary exhibition “I Love Deix”. This compares Manfred Deix with artist Werner Berg and shows that Deix was also a talented painter. Visitors can discover even more Deix originals – 61 in number – in the newly curated Deix archive 2024.
