Those are some of the “ifs” for the 24-year-old boxer who is expected to become the new face of heavyweight boxing in the United States. Jared Anderson had a solid 2023 campaign, fighting three times – most notably defeating former heavyweight titleholder Charles Martin by unanimous decision.
The promising performance comes after Anderson openly admitted that his love and passion for boxing had faded and he envisioned retiring at the age of 27. After his last fight in August, “Big Baby” has had some trouble outside of boxing, with two brushes with the law.
In February, Anderson was charged with criminal mischief after leading police on a high-speed chase. In November, he was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and improper handling of a firearm.
Jared Anderson (16-0, 15 KOs) hopes to hit the reset button on his life and career by returning to the ring on Saturday against Ryad Merhy (32-2, 26 KOs) to headline a fight card at the American Bank Center, Corpus Christi , Texas (ESPN). “I live life. This is what happens. You can only do what you can do and accept it with grace,” Anderson told BoxingScene.
“People make mistakes. I made my mistakes. I did what it took to make those mistakes right. It won’t happen again. It was just a bump in the road. … I learned that I have to be a 24/7 fighter and not just when I’m going to compete.”
Making Anderson fully focused on the fight could be his toughest opponent yet. Anderson said his passion for the sport began to wane during the pandemic. “It happened right after the bubble fight [di Las Vegas dari tahun 2020 sampai 2021],” Anderson said.
“I had fun and was still like a child. I still enjoyed what I experienced. After [pandemi] That, I have different feelings towards this sport. I started to see the world and this sport for what it really is. This is a hypocritical sport. That’s why I don’t agree with a lot of things.”
“A lot. I could talk all day. It’s a dog-eat-dog world when it comes to business. Then you have the fans and the commentators, where you can’t do the right thing. Even when you do the good thing, it just survives for so long, because when you make one mistake, no matter what it is, you will be criticized, and that puts a different spin on your career.”
