Hyperkin – PCW resurrects Sega Genesis as a portable console

The popular accessory manufacturer attacks with another nostalgic handheld console.

But we haven’t reached the end yet, because Hyperkin, which resurrected an entire line of classic Xbox controllers, has also joined the party, with a retro handheld console that resurrects Sega’s globally successful model, the Genesis, marketed like Mega Drive in Europe.

Called The Mega 95, the handheld plays Genesis games one-on-one, meaning it can accept original cartridges, too. Hidden in the housing is a 5-inch display, reminiscent of the controller of the machine launched in 1995, on which you can switch between the 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratio at any time with a switch, and you also get a USB dock -C, through which you can even use a TV, we can shoot classic titles in 720p resolution.

Hyperkin promises that the Mega 95, which currently only exists in prototype form, will last up to 10 hours on a single charge, but no other information about the hardware has been revealed, so the expected release date and price are also unknown. However, the manufacturer already sells another retro handheld console in the form of the SNES-themed SupaBoy, for which it costs $120, so it could happen that the reincarnation of the Genesis ends up in this price range.

At the same time, connoisseurs of the topic can rightfully shout that Hyperkin did not invent anything new, since the Genesis already had a portable version at its time called Nomad (1995), but it was much larger and showed only a 3 ,25-inch display games for up to 4 hours using 6 AA batteries.
