After chasing away the hyenas, the other male lions moved in to claim the spoils and slowly enjoyed the hippo’s carcass without fear of being disturbed.

As for the hyenas, when witnessing the tragic end of their kind, the other hyenas had to stay away and did not dare to return to confront the powerful male lions.

Hyenas and lions are considered arch-rivals on the savanna. Confrontations between hyenas and lions are not uncommon on the African grasslands. Although lions are considered the “kings of the savanna”, in reality hyenas are “tough” opponents and always disrupt lion hunting trips.

Thanks to their instinct to hunt in packs, hyenas know how to take advantage of numbers when surrounding and attacking prey, even if it is a strong male lion in its prime. If traveling alone, injured or old, the lion will not have enough strength and will easily become the target of the cunning and clever hyena pack.

In terms of strength, lions are of course superior to hyenas, but when surrounded by a pack of hyenas, lions cannot attack all of their opponents at the same time and can be killed by the hyenas.

Hyenas will constantly circle around to tire out their prey, then suddenly launch bites until the prey collapses from exhaustion and becomes their meal.

Hyenas are also willing to use this tactic to surround and steal lions’ prey. However, this tactic is only really effective in cases where the number of hyenas is greater than the number of lions.

Despite their superior strength, lions rarely kill hyenas to eat, but usually only attack to threaten and chase them away. On the contrary, if a pack of hyenas discovers a lion alone or injured, they will not miss the opportunity to surround, attack and finish off the lion to eat.
