According to medical literature, West Nile virus is generally spread only by infected mosquitoes. There is no strong evidence that the infection can spread from other than mosquitoes to humans.
There are typical symptoms that indicate that someone is infected with the West Nile virus. Namely fever, headache, weakness, joint and muscle pain, red eyes, rash, and sometimes accompanied by nausea and diarrhea.
In serious cases, signs of West Nile virus infection include meningitis, acute encephalitis, or acute paralysis.
So, how do you prevent West Nile infection?
According to the Jerusalem Post report, the following simple steps can be taken as a preventive measure.
1. Use mosquito repellent, either mosquito lotion or mosquito spray.
2. Adequate window curtains.
3. Appropriate clothing.
4. Report to the authorities if there are a lot of mosquitoes at home and if there are family members who are sick.
