Russia is known to have a large stockpile of Soviet-era nuclear weapons, more than any other country.
According to the Federation of American Scientists, Putin has 5,580 nuclear weapons under his control.
About 1,200 of these nuclear weapons are unusable, but most are intact. The country has around 4,380 weapons stockpiled for use by long-range strategic launchers and short-range strategic nuclear forces.
Russia has deployed 1,710 of its stockpiled nuclear weapons, including about 870 land-based ballistic missiles, about 640 submarine-launched ballistic missiles and 200 heavy bomber bases.
