SANAA – Yemen’s Houthis on Friday (31/5/2024) launched a missile attack on the United States (US) aircraft carrier Dwight D Eisenhower in the Red Sea.

The claim was revealed in a statement made in X by Houthi spokesman Yahya Saree.

Saree claimed the attack occurred in response to US and UK attacks on the Yemeni provinces of Sanaa, Hodeidah and Taiz.

The US and UK attacks allegedly targeted civilian infrastructure and resulted in the deaths of 16 people and the injury of more than 40 people.

Some of the missiles allegedly hit the Hodeidah radio station building, as well as the area around Al-Thawra Hospital and the Coast Guard headquarters at Port Al-Salib, where several commercial vessels were damaged.

“This constitutes clear targeting of civilian objects, a blatant violation of all international law, and a complete war crime. Therefore, in response to this crime and the American-British aggression… the Yemeni armed forces carried out a joint military operation targeting the aircraft carrier Eisenhower’s America in the Red Sea,” said Saree in his statement.

He claimed the attack on the US carrier was “accurate and direct,” but did not provide details about the damage to the ship.

The US Navy has not issued any statement regarding the alleged attack on its ships.

On Thursday, British and American forces launched large-scale strikes against suspected Houthi targets in Yemen as part of an ongoing operation to stop the group’s attacks on commercial ships transiting the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.
