Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels have fired a cruise missile into the Gulf of Aden. However, no ship was damaged in this attack. This information was reported by US Central Command CentCom on Thursday (March 14). British news agency Reuters reported this news.
“The missile did not hit any ships and there were no reports of casualties or damage,” a Centcom statement said on Thursday morning.
“U.S. Central Command then successfully destroyed four drones and one surface-to-air missile in Houthi-controlled areas,” the statement said.
The statement added that the weapons were determined by CENTCOM to pose an imminent threat to international commercial vessels and US Navy vessels in the region. Later they destroyed them.
The Houthis have been carrying out repeated drone and missile attacks on commercial ships in the Gulf of Aden since mid-November. They claimed that the attack was being carried out in protest against Israel’s indiscriminate attacks on Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
Free international trade is being disrupted by Houthi attacks on commercial shipping routes in the Red Sea. As an alternative, ships are forced to take long and expensive routes around South Africa. It is feared that the ongoing conflict in Gaza may spread throughout the Middle East.
When the international community called the Houthis to stop their repeated attacks, they did not pay attention to it. In response, the United States and the United Kingdom launched several attacks targeting Houthi installations.
