In the last week of the plenary session before the summer break, the governing parties wanted to show what they could do once again. Around 60 laws were passed. The announced Criminal Procedure Law Amendment Act, which is intended to introduce new rules for the confiscation of cell phones, was not passed. After massive criticism from the judiciary, the responsible Green Minister Alma Zadić announced that the review process would be extended. And this despite the fact that the governing factions ÖVP and Greens had already voted for it in the responsible justice committee. Susanne Däubel reports.

Heated clean-out

An eventful plenary week came to an end in parliament on Friday. From Wednesday to Friday, the members of the National Council met for the last time before the summer break. Although further meetings are planned in September shortly before the election, numerous legislative decisions are on the agenda at the end of the legislative period. A motion of no confidence by the FPÖ against the Green Climate Protection Minister was rejected, and the ÖVP supported Gewessler despite the coalition crisis. Overall, things were quite heated and there was more than just a hint of election campaigning. David Moidl on the last debates in the plenary before the summer break.

Holiday on demand

The “non-sessional period” is now beginning in the National Council. This year it lasts until September 10. During this period, the National Council does not normally meet – but there can be no talk of parliamentary recess, because the MPs have to prepare themselves for being called to a special session in Parliament at short notice. This is a procedure that has been used repeatedly in recent years and could also happen this year. Caroline Picker asked around how the MPs are preparing for this.
