CES 2024, the largest international consumer electronics trade show, officially kicked off yesterday in Las Vegas, US, with head-mounted displays and transparent screens taking center stage. Japanese Sony (Sony) and German Siemens (Siemens) have developed an XR (extended reality) eye mask, equipped with the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 platform, which allows professional users to instantly render object textures and 3D people through “see-through video”. Facial expressions promote cross-industry digital transformation and realize the vision of an industrial metaverse.

Sony’s device does not have an official name, but is temporarily called the “Spatial Content Creation System”. It has a total of 6 lenses and sensors and can work independently without a computer. Through the ring and ring controller, users can immerse themselves in the virtual space environment and control objects intuitively and accurately. At the same time, the front cover of the eye mask can be lifted to immediately return to the real world. The new system will be launched later this year and there is no word yet on pricing.

Apple Vision Pro available for pre-order starting next Friday

Apple Inc. confirmed on Monday that its first head-mounted mixed reality (MR) device, the Vision Pro, will be available in the United States from February 2nd and will be available for pre-order starting next Friday (19th). Being a space computer, Vision Pro has 256GB of built-in storage and supports visual, manual and voice control. The product is priced at US$3,499 (approximately HK$27,300). Apple has specially launched Zeiss lenses for nearsightedness and farsightedness for people who need vision correction, with prices starting from $149 and $99.

On the other hand, the American company XREAL also presented the Air 2 Ultra augmented reality (AR) glasses at CES, which are positioned as a mature “spatial computing” device capable of projecting floating images before the eyes. The titanium alloy body weighs just 80 grams and, in addition to voice interaction, is also equipped with a 3D environmental sensor capable of tracking hands and recognizing gestures. The product will ship in March this year, priced at US$699 (around HK$5,452), and could be considered an affordable alternative to the Vision Pro.

Smart reading glasses with auto focus

Elderly people who suffer from presbyopia will have blurred vision of nearby objects, so they will need to wear progressive lenses every day. ViXion, a subsidiary of Japanese optical giant HOYA, displayed the ViXion01 “autofocus glasses” at CES. Designed by world-renowned design company Nendo, the glasses weigh just 50 grams and detect the user’s viewing distance and automatically adjust the focus of near and far objects. The IPX3 waterproof rating can withstand light rain or sweat and can be used continuously for 10 hours on a single charge. The product was launched on the Japanese market at a price of 99,000 yen (approximately HK$5,368).
