The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, stated this Wednesday during his morning press conference that all the countries of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac) support Mexico for the assault on the embassy in Quito, Ecuador.
In this regard, the Government of Honduras informed President López Obrador that it will withdraw its diplomatic personnel from Ecuador as a show of support for Mexico after the invasion of its embassy in Quito on April 5.
“The meeting was called by the president of Honduras, Xiomara Castro and, at the end, she notified me that they were also going to show solidarity and were going to call their diplomatic representatives, she just couldn’t say it. In other words, it is not just the case of Venezuela and we thank you very much,” said López Obrador.
“Everyone helping, supporting Mexico, supporting Mexico. I just want to say that the meeting was called by the President of Honduras, Xiomara Castro, and at the end she notified me that they are also going to show solidarity and are going to call their diplomatic representatives, nothing more than that she was not able to say it. In other words, it is not just the case of Venezuela, but also Honduras and we thank you very much,” she said.
Previously, Foreign Minister Enrique Reina reported that Honduras withdrew the consul in Ecuador on instructions from President Xiomara Castro.
Honduras joins Venezuela and Mexico who withdrew their diplomatic officials in Ecuador after police from that country broke into the embassy of the Aztec country to remove former vice president Jorge Glas, who is already imprisoned.
At the meeting, called by the pro tempore president of Celac, Xiomara Castro, a proposal approved by the foreign ministers was announced, in which the member countries condemn the assault on the diplomatic headquarters, demand sanctions against Ecuador, and request a safe passage so that Glas can go to Mexico.
At the meeting, López Obrador was able to confirm the support of the countries in the region. The president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, announced the closure of his Embassy and consulates in Ecuador, while the president of Bolivia, Luis Arce, assured that he would join the complaint of the Mexican Government.
He added that “we proceed to call Tegucigalpa to consult our Charge d’Affaires in Ecuador. Likewise, we will take the necessary steps to support Mexico’s actions before the UN and the International Court of Justice.”
Likewise, this Wednesday, the Honduran president, Xiomara Castro, notified him that she will also temporarily withdraw her diplomats from Ecuador, as a sign of support for Mexico’s demand.
The president of Ecuador, Daniel Noboa, did not attend the meeting called by Celac.
