Honduras seizes 1.3 tons of cocaine in Caribbean village

Honduran authorities seized 1,300 kilos of cocaine that were being transported in a vehicle on the Caribbean coast, the National Police reported on Thursday.

During an operation carried out on Wednesday night, “approximately 1,300 kilograms of cocaine hydrochloride were seized” in the community of Jutiapa, in the northern department of Atlántida, the institution said in a statement.

Police, who did not specify whether any arrests were made in connection with the seizure, estimated the value of the drugs at $17.5 million.

More than five tons of cocaine have been seized this year by Honduran authorities.

On August 4, 4.1 tons of drugs seized in various police and military operations were incinerated.

Honduras and other Central American countries are classified as gateways for cocaine from the producing countries of South America to the United States market.
